An Untold Story of a Chartered Accountant and CISA – Certified Information Systems Auditor from USA.
It is time to unravel a truth of a physically challenged and specially abled child.
Born in 1971, in a middle class family in Kolkata where majority of people are handicapped persons starting from my grandfather, father and many uncles. But my family is an educated family and majority of them are from legal profession. I am fourth generation handicapped person with genetic disorder. Last person to carry that disorder in my whole family including extended family.
I was not so good at mathematics and scored very low in Class VIII. That day I decided to make career in Commerce. But many of my family members except my parents taunted me that at maximum I will end up in being petty clerk of a Government department through handicapped quota.
I decided otherwise as I was determined to fight back. I completed Chartered Accountancy course in 1998 and thought it might not be fully equipped to handle the innovations in IT. That made me to mix with Big 4 guys in the year 2000. I along with Big4 friends opened Kolkata ISACA Chapter (Chapter no 165) in the year 2000. I was the only member without CISA degree. I passed CISA in 2001 in first attempt. I hold ISACA chapter office for 2 years in a row. Was instrumental in started IS audit movement in so early days of 2000-2001.
This is not the end of the story. Before leaving for Nairobi in 2002 for a forensic audit my family decided for my marriage. I was scared and sceptical about bringing another handicapped child in our family. I wrote the advertisement of my marriage in leading newspaper disclosing myself about handicapped person. I don’t want to fool any prospective girl to marry me with false information. Though my parents had a fear whether I will get lady to marry being a handicapped person.
During my stay at Nairobi, I was thinking what to do post my marriage. I had a conversation with one of my best friend in Nairobi to discuss what to do. He suggested many options like test tube baby, surrogacy and last one was adoption of a child. He told me that see Jayjit you have good convincing and communication skill and now it is up to you to convince your would be spouse about benefits of adoption and also to break the chain of genetic disorder as you are last person who is carrying this issue. This made me adamant and equally optimistic about my marriage. When I returned to Kolkata for marriage it was in my mind that I will convince my would be spouse and in laws about adoption.
Somehow I succeeded in doing so and got a beautiful and rationale wife with a hidden truth. When I went to saw Sujata my would be wife and wife at present, his father told me that he wanted to have a personal dialogue with me. I agreed but never imagined what was stored for me. In one evening my would be father in law met me in a restaurant. Once he met me suddenly he seemed to be upset and lost in tears and tried to convene me a hidden truth. He took a commitment that this private dialogue or truth I will never tell to my parents till I agree to marry. He had given me a choice to reject Sujata on this ground. He told me that Sujata his younger daughter is incapable to give a birth of a child genetically. He was in tears. I understood the pain of a father and his anxiety to get her daughter married. Once I heard this my inner shelf jumped up in joy as I need this type of lady only who will agree for adoption and I can break the chain of genetic disorder. But I never dreamt that I need not convince anyone for adoption as it was an automatic choice between both of us. So I grabbed this opportunity gracefully and committed my father in law that I will marry her daughter without any hesitance and I will never disclose this to my parents. I thank GOD Almighty that our marriage was destined by GOD himself and match was made in heaven. Eventually, we got married and after some efforts we could adopt a girl child from Sangli, Maharashtra.
Most interesting part you know that one of my uncle could not marry out of this fear. He had won President Award for Outstanding Handicapped Person of the Year 1996. But he could not fulfil his dream of marriage. But I could because I had a dream with full of positive ness and now having a daughter of 11 years.
Government of West Bengal has awarded me Outstanding Handicapped Person of Year 2000 and I received the award from Governor of West Bengal.
